An Altar is your designated threshold into the world of spirit.
Inside your home, you can select a table or a shelf as your altar. Outside, you can set boundaries with stones on the ground, or use a large, single natural object or piece of statuary as a focal point. Any place can be appropriate.
Listen in meditation or prayer for your own guides to name the spot.
Within the altar, you generate an energetic "container" which holds the presence of sacred space. You can do this with a simple ceremony and by stated intention.
It is common practice to ceremonially clear old energies from the area with lighted sage and/or other herbs, called "smudging".
You might choose to leave your altar space empty, or you might choose to fill it with meaningful objects. These often include natural fiber fabrics to cover the table,
candles, crystals, or statues, any item or object that has personal meaning,
vessels to hold written prayers or affirmations, bits of natural material brought back from a sacred event.
